Short-Term Study and Long-Term Study Scholarships
at Mandarin Training Center (MTC)
National Taiwan Normal University

Below is a summary of the scholarship requirements and deadlines. For more detailed information, please refer to the attached slides.
 
I. Eligibility
Current UCLA students or UCLA students who are graduating within 2 months.

II. Quota

Short-term (2-3 months): 10
Long-term (4+ months): 4

III. Benefits
You will study at the Mandarin Training Center, National Taiwan Normal University. Scholarship recipients will receive TWD 28,000 (about US $875, subject to exchange rate) per month. The scholarship awardees are required to participate in “NTNU Hands Linked Program,” a service learning program. Participants are required to take the TOCFL exam before or after arriving in Taiwan.
 
IV. Course Periods and Application Deadlines

Short-Term Scholarships

  • 3-month summer session (June 9 - August 27, 2026) Deadline: April 29, 2026 Pacific Time
  • 2-month summer session (July 7 - August 27, 2026) Deadline: May 30, 2026 Pacific Time

Long-Term Scholarships

  • Duration of 4 - 10 months Deadline: April 29, 2026 Pacific Time

V. Required Application Documents

  1. Application Form (email huayubest@mtc.ntnu.edu.tw for the form).
  2. One Letter of Recommendation from an instructor (The instructor referee should directly send the recommendation letter via an email to huayubest@mtc.ntnu.edu.tw with Subject: "Recommendation for Your Name)."
  3. Official university transcript (sent by your university).
  4. A photocopy/scan of your passport photo page.
  5. TOCFL (Mandarin Test) transcript, if available.

 VII. Requirement for Test of Chinese as Foreign Language (TOCFL)

Scholarship recipients are required to take the TOCFL exam before or after arriving in Taiwan. (An Affidavit Letter is required for those who do not provide TOCFL score transcripts before arriving in Taiwan to promise to take the TOCFL exam in Taiwan.)

 About the Mandarin Training Center at NTNU

The Mandarin Training Center, founded in 1956, is the largest and most renowned Chinese language center in Taiwan. Part of NTNU and centrally located in Taipei, MTC offers robust Chinese language and culture training with a well-designed curriculum, top-notch teachers, and a holistic pedagogical approach. Students can enhance their knowledge of Chinese language and culture with courses on topics such as traditional Chinese literature, tea traditions, and contemporary Taiwanese TV shows. Students will be equipped with Chinese proficiency to facilitate their research and career interests, as well as sociocultural capacities to navigate and interact with Chinese speakers on daily basis. The reputation of MTC is widely recognized, and the program has more than 50,000 alumni across the globe, including former Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd.

Students’ Experiences

NTNU is home to a vibrant international student community that comprises 5,000 international students from over 70 countries. NTNU affords life-changing experiences, where students are bound to make friends from diverse cultural backgrounds while deepening their appreciation of Chinese culture through various on-campus extracurricular activities and events, such as language contests, sports competitions, Dragon boat teams, and off-site adventures around Taiwan. Students can easily explore the best night market in Taipei, stroll in a beautiful park, and immerse themselves in the National Palace Museum – all within walking distance or a couple of metro stops. After class, you most likely find students trying out tasty street food and boba, relaxing at the amazing recreation facilities, or studying at the modern NTNU library. The convenient location, on-campus activities and connections to the dynamic city inevitably enrich students’ experiences at NTNU and enhance the holistic learning among students.
